Well, I guess the best way to start this is to introduce myself. My name is Mark Twogood. If you have a little time, I'll tell you the story behind the Trespasser Poster, how it came about, and how the Society of C.O.W. started.
After retiring from the sport of rodeo (bull riding and broncs) at the ripe old age of 32, I needed some healing, rest, and time to figure out what was next. Where could I go to find some peace and quiet? Memories of my childhood flooded my head - growing up on a ranch in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana. Then it hit me...I wondered if my Dad’s cabin was still there. It was located in the mountains where our cattle enjoyed grazing all summer. So I headed home to Montana to borrow a horse and pack mule to head up to the cabin.
“Cow Camp Cabin" was built by my dad, located on the summer range near our ranch. It sat in a beautiful meadow with windows protected (from bears) with cross-cut saws. Inside there was a cook stove (wood and kindling stacked nearby), shelves of canned goods, and sleeping bags (rolled and hung from the rafters to keep rodents out!) - everything you’d need for a pleasant stay. It was used, not only by family and ranch hands, but also all visitors were welcome. There was a wood-burned sign on the door that read: “Enjoy your stay. Leave it as you found it.” That pretty much sums up how things were “back in the day.”
Well, the devastation I came upon was unbelievable. Some character(s) with a shotgun had broken all the windows and annihilated the stove; feathers were everywhere from the sleeping bags, and canned goods had been peppered with holes and the contents were dripping down the walls. Even the outhouse (an amenity that dad considered necessary for womenfolk guests, even with a cowhide covered seat) was mutilated. The door was ripped off its hinges.
After several days of cleaning and putting back together what I could (and getting madder by the minute), an idea hit me...why not create a NO TRESPASSING poster that would get their attention! These “varmints” had taken my dad’s trust and compassion for others coming to the cabin, and destroyed everything that he stood for - honesty, integrity, and justice.
That idea (with some help from a college professor in Calgary) turned into the formation of the Society of C.O.W. Western Justice and the Trespasser Poster came alive.
